The Ayurvedic Diet – Details for each Dosha

//The Ayurvedic Diet – Details for each Dosha

ayurvedic herbsI get asked about how to follow an Ayurvedic diet a lot.  After over ten years of esthetic practice and my observations as an Ayurvedic practitioner, I’ve seen the influence it has on our skin and bodies.  When we eat according to our specific body type, our tissues respond with gratitude and healthiness!  Like skincare, the Ayurvedic diet is based on our specific constitution and tendencies.

The DL on the Ayurvedic Diet

Unlike reports I read about “Green Tea being good!” or “Tomatoes being cancer-causing” – its about which foods are good for whom and which ones are detrimental based on our unique make up (known as our Dosha).  For instance – those of us with high Vata are prone to dryness, tissue depletion and premature skin aging.  So, we need oil-rich, nourishing and hydrating foods that stimulate our circulation (and therefore our collagen production) and our digestion (as digestion is often weak leading to malabsorption and gas/bloating).  Those of us with high Pitta are prone to inflammation internally and externally (hello rosacea!).  Foods to temper this heat must be cooling, alkalizing (note: sour foods are acidic), low fat (some fats are good but excess fat is taxing for the liver, which leads to inflammation) and anti-inflammatory.  And lastly, those of us with high Kapha are prone to water-retention, fat-accumulation, mucous, congestion and pore-build up.  To counter this, we need foods that are detoxifying, astringent and create lightness in the body (hydrating and heating).

woman eatingSo, here’s a nice little chart to sum up what each of these types should eat.  Though, it is important to note we need to take specific food sensitivities into consideration.  For example, while I’m Pitta predominate, I avoid wheat or dairy – not only because they are often ridden with GMOs and hormones due to commercial production, they are common allergens (and two of which my body cannot handle.  This can be due to a Vata imbalance from my busy and frenetic lifestyle, but whatever the cause, its important so avoid foods that I am sensitive to because eating them will also lead to inflammation.  For everything else, I try to follow the below.

Im so thrilled I came across your website and this article! Everything I’ve read has explained my neck breakouts to a T, and helped me better understand my hormonal acne. I can’t wait to see some results following this kapha diet!
