For anyone who has followed by blog knows, I am all about balance – balancing my diet, balancing my stress levels, and of course, balancing my energies (doshas). Well, today I want to talk about another aspect of our bodies we need to balance: PH. Yes, think back to high school chemistry: acid vs alkaline (or basic). Now, before I continue, keep in mind when I speak about PH balancing, I’m referring on balancing the PH of our body fluids (which can be measured through saliva or urine) and not the PH of our skin (which is also important but a conversation for another day). It is important to balance our PH because when we become too acid or too alkaline, it translates into different health implications…and of course, therefore beauty implications.
When we are too alkaline, we can become prone to yeast and fungus and low blood pressure. When we are too high in acid, we become prone to inflammation (inside and on our skin), acid reflux and indigestion, kidney dysfunction (dehydration) and a lack of minerals in our internal body. This is because minerals are alkaline, so as our bodies attempt to rebalance themselves, they use up minerals to alkalize our systems. This leads to a depletion of calcium in our bones. Alkalizing foods are most fruits and veggies, as well as minerals and dairy. Acid-forming foods are most starches, meats and beans. I’m generalizing, but this is an overview (you can find lists online very easily).
If you ask me, it sounds like alkaline symptoms are very similar to the Kapha dosha, while acid sounds like a Pitta influence (or for you TCM enthusiasts: Yin and Yang). Its all connected!….but I digress.
Well, for myself as an acidic-prone person, there is the alkaline water stick. I was so excited to find this little tool, especially because I have been particularly acid lately. I could tell because A) my eczema is flaring up and B) I’ve been feeling ill upon eating acidic foods.
And while I am doing my best to de-stress and eat a balancing diet, its nice to know you can give yourself extra help with extra supplementation. How does it work? This metal stick has holes in it and in its center there is a column of tourmaline – these minerals alkalize your drinking water. You simply put this stock into your Kleen Kateen or any glass of water and let it soak for 10 minutes…I actually just let it sit in there for the whole day.
Now, most of the Pure + Simple staff are using this handy stick to alkalize as they work (it can take a lot of stress to create this much relaxation). Some of them have said they need to take their stick out early because the metallic taste gets stronger as it absorbs, but for me, I don’t taste a difference. To me its just lovely balancing water.
So, if you are feeling like you have a need for some alkalining, give this a whirl, and help stick it to high acid.
