As many of you may know, I have a hard time sleeping. I’ve tried taking valerian and melatonin, I’ve looked at my eating habits and have tried to reduce my stress levels – but these have all only had limited success. A girl needs her beauty sleep! Not only for her dark circles but for her own sanity.
So, on the recommendation of a client of mine, I went to a hypnotist. Yep, you read that right, a hypnotist. Now I’m quite a skeptical soul but when what you’ve been doing doesn’t work you need to re-evaluate your approach and restrategize. Especially when the referral came from my client – a super savvy lawyer with a good dose a skepticism. I decided to take a leap of faith and give it a go. What did I have to lose (except $135)?
I booked with Barb Keshan, who coincidentally is located in the same building as our King Street Spa location and the experience was very unlike what I imagined. For some reason, I thought it was going to involve a pocket watch and the words “you are getting very sleeep-eeeey”. But it wasn’t like that at all. Barb took my into her office and asked me a few questions about my thoughts surrounding sleep in order to understand what needed reprogramming. What I discovered form her Q and A was that I actually resented sleep. My attitude towards sleep was quite negative and as much as I wanted to get some shut eye, I was very defeatist about the likeliness of actually being able to do so. Barb explained that these thoughts unconsciously create anxiety around sleep and your body is unable to relax. Furthermore, we discovered that even though intellectually I know how essential sleep is to health, on some level I felt like it was “boring” and a “waste of time”. How Pitta of me! So, Barb put together some mantras for me such as “sleep is healthy”, “sleep is nourishing” and “sleep makes you more productive”.
After the strategy and mantras were set we began the hypnosis. This was more of a waking meditation than what I had envisioned. Apparently there is something about being in a relaxed state and hearing this new re-framing of sleep leads to re-association. Barb led me through a twenty minute session where she repeated some of the mantras along with some other pro-sleep ideas and I woke up feeling more refreshed than I have in ages. She also gave me a CD recording of her session that I was to listen to before bed each night. Barb said that she didn’t figure I had to go back, which I appreciated because I didn’t know how I felt about paying that much money for a series of sessions. I felt that the value was good as it was a single session and I did receive the CD as a take-home tool.
I downloaded the CD to my ipod and Ben and I have gotten into the routine of playing it as we fall asleep. I have found that it really helps to force me into a relaxed state and pushes out my mental chatter. Some nights are better than others but its definitely a very helpful tool and I often drift off into slumber before the recording is over.
