I hate getting my period. I don’t want to but I do. I know, I know, I gotta love being a woman and all that jazz but its so hard when I feel bloated…the furthest thing from sexy. So, I’ve been researching what to do for period bloating, interviewing health pros on the subject and experimenting with my findings. Now my friends, here is a list of the most repeated recommendations and my own insights on the results!

Clean That Liver!

The liver is a huge organ. I’ve seen cadavers and was shocked by its gigantic size! This is probably because its responsible for so many functions and is also a mega filter for our bodies. Not surprisingly, the liver filters many hormones out too. This organ is important in bloating because it is often the extra hormone (particularly progesterone) that is linked to period bloating. If the liver is impeded, it does a poorer job eliminating the influx of hormone. Many of us have an over-worked liver saddled with toxins because living a modern life with its many vices is hard on the poor liver. This is why it is important to cleanse the liver habitually so it ca function optimally. Herbs such as dandelion, milk-thistle and neem are excellent liver cleansers but there are many others. I recommend talking to your naturopathic doctor about which ones are best for you. I’m a bit of an experimenter so I hastily decided to take two capsules of magnesium bisglycinate on my own. Well, I experienced diarrhea and bloating! When I went down to two, it was perfect and I had relaxed smooth muscle and effortless elimination. I have also use this trial and error method with the liquid form of magnesium.

Turmeric

If you read this blog often, you probably know that I’m a little obsessed with turmeric. Turmeric is a root herb that looks like the bright orange cousin to ginger and it has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Its is also a liver and blood cleanser and aids digestion. All of these actions are reasons why it helps bloating – especially during our periods when we are prone to being inflamed. I take turmeric is capsules of dried herb but its also available in a tincture or even fresh. Saying this, I find it less effective when its taken as curcumin. Curcumin is a component within turmeric that is identified as an anti-inflammatory. I find that herbs are often most effective when they are taken in whole form as they have other compounds that enhance their function.

Relax, Take Magnesium

Magnesium is a mineral that relaxes smooth muscle and also softens stool. Relaxing our internal muscles and digestive tract can do a lot to move gas and bloating through our systems. Along with this, its amazing for cramps. When I use magnesium in high doses before my period, my cramps are dramatically diminished. Along with this, it softens stool. So many women experience constipation around their period, which contributes to their bloating. Magnesium helps to hydrate and soften stool so its easier to pass a bowel movement. Just be careful not to take too much or you may get diarrhea. Its best to start slowly and talk to your health practitioner about the best doses for your body.

Hawthorn Berry

It was Dr. Emily Lipinski of periodmakeover.com that told me about hawthorne berry for period cramps. This fruit helps the circulatory system and aids digestion and is indicated for bldod clots and food stagnation. These are excellent for period bloat to move blood and keep the digestive system functioning well.

Kidney Strengthening
The kidneys are responsible for water metabolism in our bodies. So if we feel swollen with edema during our cycles, we should also look to treating our kidneys as they may be taxed and not functioning properly. For more info, read my blog post on how to care for the kidneys. Beyond this, herbs such as parsley, chanca piedra and dandelion are great kidney cleansers. Dandelion was already mentioned above as a liver cleanser, so you may be able to target two organs with this one fantastic herb!

Belly Massage
This tip is from my own personal experience as an esthetician and gal who gets bloated. I find rubbing the tummy in a clockwise direction helps to move gas a bloating and encourage blood flow. It sounds too simple but sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. This manual practice provides immediate relief – and when I have run out of options, its what I find works best.
