London’s Healthy Food Porn: Not Your Bangers and Mash

//London’s Healthy Food Porn: Not Your Bangers and Mash

When I’m in London I really do one thing: eat. I skip sights like The Crown Jewels and Big Ben (maybe stroll around the British Museum to help me digest) and refer to my prepared itinerary of healthy food restaurants. This trip was particularly delicious, so feast your eyes on this. I also received a few insider tips from locals, which is always invaluable and have provided the links to the venues too!

Mildred’s
Not a new place but one that I always hit up. This little Soho eatery is thought to be the best vegetarian resto in London by a few of my resources. To prove it, they don’t take reservations and there is always a line up to get in. Even on a Tuesday night…in the rain.

The Bonnington Cafe

The Bonnington Cafe is less hip than Mildred’s but has a wonderful alternative vibe. Its actually a collective so there are different chefs each day. I hear that this sprung out of the fact that the area its in used to be an underprivileged area and many of the homes didn’t have kitchens – so the Bonnington cafe was really a place where locals would come and cook for the community. While the area is becomeing more and more gentrified, this community culture is still alive and kickin’. The restaurant feels like someone’s home and we actually had to text the chef of the day directly for a reservation. We had a great time and the food was really reasonable (a nice change from other London establishments…damn you exchange rate!). Saying this, I have no idea what other days would be like as it would be a different cook on staff.

The Artesian
A bit of a luxury, I tried this fancy pants bar on recommendation. It apparently voted best bar in the world so I was curious. The cocktail I ordered was made with Kombucha so I’m going to pretend that cancels out the alcohol factor;)

Gordon’s Wine Bar

Spend a day here in the romantic wine cellar. This place has all the atmosphere you could want as well as some organic plates and wines. I’m not a wine expert but I heard many ooohs and ahhhs over the wine list – so wine lovers, I think is your haven. It seems like yelp backs me up.

The Acorn
Okay, so not quite London but I had to include this restaurant. Its one of the best vegetarian restaurants I have ever been to and I have been to A LOT. I’m no longer vegan but I always check out veggie restos while in world-class cities because its great to see the innovation abroad. I think the top spot still goes to a Buddhist temple restaurant in Kyoto followed by a few places in India – but maybe this would be my fav in Europe? Their focus on local, organic shines through the beauty of their dishes. I’m glad there was a group of us so I could steal off many different plates!
