Castor oil is making a come back! Sure its been around for a loooong time (heck, it was mentioned in a film from the 1930’s I was watching last week (love me a scandalous pre-code) but for many, its just newly making waves on the online beauty scene (all that talk about castor oil cleansing!). Well, this uber rich oil shouldn’t only be used as part of this skincare trend, it has many uses. For years, this oil has been used for a plethora of things from liver detoxification, scar fading and eye lash thickening. Read on for ten ways you can use castor to beautify your skin and body!
1. To Cleanse
Let’s start by talking about the oil cleansing method. You may have heard of it as so many beauty bloggers tout it as a great way to remove dirt and impurities without stripping your skin (I also review it myself at the link above). Castor is the most common oil to use because its viscous texture gives it the ability to loosen toxins from the skin. However, not all skin types can use this oil as castor is very stimulating. I recommend either diluting it or starting with a less stimulating oil (such as coconut) and phasing it in gradually.
2. Nail Nourishment
Brittle nails? Dried out cuticles? Castor oil is an excellent treatment on our finger tips because it is probably the richest oil on the market. Heck, its texture is downright “gluey”. But this makes for a great protective barrier for weak nails in need of nourishment and shielding. It super moisturizes! Also, castor oil stimulates blood flow to the area. Since our extremities are the last to receive circulation, this helps to encourage blood to these tissues. Weak nails despite what you apply topically? 3. Relieve Constipation For Clearer Skin
Castor oil is a powerful laxative. It really gets things moving! This is no secret, people have been using it forever for moving toxins through the GI tract. Heck, I was watching a movie from the 1930’s (love me some pre-code) and the lead character tells a little boy to take a spoon after OD’ing on chocolate. I’ve also used castor oil as part of an Ayurvedic Detox. This is important because our complexions are very connected to bowel health. Constipation can lead to acne, breakouts, dehydration and inflammation. In fact, one Ayurvedic Doctor told me that people with high Pitta and breakouts should take one to spoons of castor oil once per month as a bowel and liver detoxifier.
4. Thicken Your Lashes
I have written about how this oil promotes fuller eyelashes in my tips for luscious lashes. This old tip was told to me by a makeup artist who has been using for years! This oil promote hair growth because of its circulation-stimulating properties and nourishing consistency. Dab some oil on your lashes each night and watch ’em grow day by day before your very eyes!
5. Fill In Those Brows
As I said before, it stimulates growth. So, while it promotes fuller lashes, it also fills out eyebrows. If you have sparse browse like me, applying castor oil to your brows every night is a real godsend.
6. Scar Fix
Castor oil has been using as a home remedy against scarring. I have been using it on my own stomach daily to fade a surgical scar. This oil helps to encourage collagen production and therefore rebuilding healthy skin tissue. For more natural scar tips, read my post on fading skin marks depending on their type!
7. Castor Oil Detox Packs
This oil may be most famous for it’s packs. Its used as a topical medicinal treatment to detoxify our internal organs gently. This is usually done by massaging it into the abdominal area then placing either an organic cotton sheet or plastic wrap over top of it to prevent it getting all over your clothes. I know many women who do this each night for poly cystic ovaries, constipation or liver cleansing. The oil is said to penetrate the skin and create stimulation and detoxification in the areas its placed over. Its especially good for diminshing cysts and other growsth. One naturopathic doctor even told me she uses it to naturally whittle down bone spurs. Wowee!
8. Lip Slick
Want a high gloss finish? Well throw away petroleum lip products and just use castor oil. Because of its richness, it makes for an excellent lip slick. Just dab over your favorite lipstick for a shiny, kissable smile. If you don’t want to use castor because of its laxative properties (I’ve never had a problem using it as a lip gloss), you can also use pomegranate oil. My thoughts with pom oil here!
9. Cure Cracked Heels
Dry cracked heels? Use this in an at-home pedi to heal ’em! This oil is so thick that it acts as a salve that fills in those cracks. Split skin needs a barrier to protect it as its repairing as well as an intensive moisturizer to increase suppleness. Use castor on any type of broken skin from split hands and chaffed arms.
10. Hair Treatment
Okay, this is messy because its so greasy but castor oil makes more a mega-nourishing conditioning treatment. Not only will it infuse life back into dried out strands but it also stimulates hair growth as I’ve said all over this article. Learn how to use castor oil in your hair here!
