As an advocate of skin hydration, hardly ever will you see me recommend something dry when there is a wet, moisturizing version of it. But Ayurvedic dry cleansers are an exception. In Ayurveda, cleansing is often characterized by exfoliation and sloughing away dead skin cells or wastes. Dr. Lad once told our class about skin cleansing in places where water is scarce – and the use of sand as a daily cleansing exfoliator instead. Yes, Ayurvedically, it has more to do with renewal than simply the removal of dirt.
The DL On Dry Cleansers
Even when doing internal cleansing and detoxifying, Ayurveda recommends many traditional herbs that are known to scrape toxins from the intestinal wall. This is why traditional Ayurvedic cleansers are actually cleansing granules. These dry powders are to be applied on wet skin and used to gently scrub and rejuvenate the skin. And besides being excellent exfoliators, the use of dry ingredients is beneficial as it keeps for much longer (extending its shelf life) and also is void of many reaction-making ingredients. Because they contain only powdered herbs and plants, they are free of many oils, preservatives and waxes that some clients are sensitive to. I recently recommended a dry cleanser to a client who was looking for gluten-free and nut-free skincare, as many other products had sheabutter, nut oils and wheat germ extract. And if you are uncomfortable with the idea of dry cleansers, you can always moisten it by mixing it with your regular facial wash or milk. Its also nice because you can control how much or little scrubbing agent you have in your exfoliant (based on how sensitive you are).
