The Ayurvedic Approach to Acne – a chat with Dr. Vasant Lad

//The Ayurvedic Approach to Acne – a chat with Dr. Vasant Lad

Dr. Vasant Lad is one of my personal idols.  Not only did he found The Ayurvedic Institute – the first Ayurvedic school in North America – and has written tens of books on the Ayurveda, so many of which enrich my personal library, but it is a very special thing to meet someone who seems so enlightened that they don’t possess a judgemental bone on their body. I believe that this frame of mind gives you clarity that makes you an exceptional healer as you can truly connect with those you treat.

So when I had a chance to sit down with this guru to hear his views on holistic well being, the first thing I did was ask him about…pimples! Deep eh? All joking aside, it actually can be. From an Ayurvedic point of view, acne stems from an imbalance of dosha – specifically our pitta dosha.  It is an expression of disharmony within our bodies, which untreated, can permeate throughout our systems creating further imbalance. So clearing up are skin can be a beautiful journey to health if taking a holistic approach.

Here you can watch Dr. L directly and see what he has to say about acne solutions through the lens Ayurveda.

Enjoy.

Very informative Kristen. I usually get acne mostly tiny cystic ones on the jawline. I read in your book that if acne is on the jawline then it is due to Kapha dosha. I usually drink a Kapha detoxifying tea at that time and it seems to clear the acne (tea made with cumin seeds, coriander seeds, cinnamon and some tulsi leaves). Does this mean there is more pitta and less Kapha?

Vaishali, did you make a typo? It seems that Kapha acne would be cleared up by a kapha tea. Though the tea you outlined has ingredients that balance both kapha & pitta. If the blemishes are inflamed then there is an element of pitta too

I am suffering from severe acne on my forehead, sides of face, chin and nose and middle part of skin is clear. However I also have black dark blemish around my mouth. I am completely shattered because my face used to look so beautiful before. I am undergoing treatment from Kaya Skin Clinic for the acne and also taking antibiotics that is helping my reduce the acne. I am using turmeric and honey paste daily for half an hour. Is there anything you can advice, Pls advice.
