They say you’re only as old as you feel, and lately I have been feeling mighty old. With the Whole Life Expo approaching, product launches being planned and a variety of upcoming projects in the works (stay tuned for updates!), I have been a total stress head. As we know, stress leads to some very unpretty things like dehydration (from kidney and adrenal taxation), tissue damage and free radical formation and general doshic imbalance.
Stress is aging – and as much as I know this, I find it so hard to manage. Being a type A, Pitta person, I get fairly fixated on my goals, and I often get stuck in stress cycles that I can’t get out of. Luckily, I have found one thing that really helps this (besides a good facial…wink): having fun…even when you don’t think you have time to!
This Saturday Ben and I had tickets to the WU LYF show, but we were feeling way too tired to go out. I had a ton of work to finish on Sunday and when we found out that the band didn’t go on until midnight, I tweeted “Don’t they know I need my beauty sleep #WULYF #Horseshoetavern”. But despite feeling like a couple of yuppies, we decided to put on our most comfortable runners (I’m too old to endure the back pain of standing for hours) and drive down to The Legendary Horse Shoe Tavern. This of course was with ear plugs in hand, which we always bring to concerts ever since we went to the Pony Tail show that was so loud Ben thought he was going to vomit (that’s rock n’ roll).
When we got there it was packed and filled with rowdy kids and shadows of young couples making out (sigh, oh to be young again!). And when the band started, they hit me like a punch in the face. They were really great! The crowd was really energetic and pushed its weight around, the band mirrored this energy and had stripped off their shirts by the end of the gig (too hard-core for clothes?). But while I thought all these things would bring out the bah-hum bug in me, I strangely felt really happy to be there. It was intoxicating – like we were feeding off the exuberant energy of the room. It helped to shake me out of the grocery lists and unread emails on my mind.
I’ve experienced something like this before. A few years ago Ben and I were having a really stressed out time at work. We were turning down social invites and getting ourselves into tizzies by constantly hyping each other up about our anxieties. Then one night we went to see Super Bad on a whim, and a few silly belly laughs broke us out of our stress coma. Going to see WU LYF was the same thing. Walking out of that show, we both felt revitalized and even a little more agile. Since then, Ben has been blaring their album all weekend.
So, if any of you out there are like me and my friends: working hard to get ahead, taking night courses to stay competitive, trying to exercise, stay fit and make your meals from scratch, attempting to find some energy to foster your relationships or contribute to the community, and of course, trying to achieve balance in all this (which is work in itself)) – maybe its time to break out of your uber practical routine and do something frivolous. Jump around, stay out late dancing or belt out an old fav at karaoke! Because I think that real, holistic anti-aging is not only about quality natural skincare and nutrition, it also involves staying young at heart.
Below is a vid I caught of the gig on my phone just to show you how excited the crowd was. The first few seconds are in black because I was being tossed around a bit. Under this is a WU LYF video if you’re interested as my clip is of pretty poor quality.
