A Recipe for Hydrated Skin: Nutritional Beauty with Joy McCarthy

//A Recipe for Hydrated Skin: Nutritional Beauty with Joy McCarthy

I am the first person to say that beauty is not something that can be addressed from skincare alone.  I surf tons of blogs and articles on the nutritional aspect of beauty, and in my search is how I first met Joy McCarthy.  She has a wonderful blog that provides excellent information on health and wellness, but also of course, how this relates to great skin.  It’s filled with words of wisdom as well as (my favorite) delicious, nutrition-packed recipes (and they’re usually quick and easy to do!).

So, after much chat and finally meeting her in person, I was dying to ask her to guest blog and give my readers a recipe for beauty.  And, in this season of transition, we thought something for skin hydration would be perfect….enjoy!

Increase your skin’s hydration with this refreshingly sweet drink.

It’s been a long Canadian winter but spring is finally here and this means it’s time for lighter clothes and showing off some skin. If the winter has left you with dry, flaky, rough skin, you may be a little bit shy to show it off, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Instead of keeping it hidden under clothes, you can hydrate from the inside and get your glow on from the outside.

No matter how much you slather on the lotion (which always helps for immediate hydration), if you eat mostly cooked foods, don’t drink enough water and avoid good fats, then your skin will always look zapped of moisture. I have just the recipe to help with saturating your skin with moisture that is uncooked, full of hydration and even has some good fat. All in one refreshing, sweet and satisfying drink to feed that thirsty skin.

Ingredients:
1 litre of filtered water
1 soft avocado, peeled, seed removed
Juice of 3 limes
1/4 cup chopped fresh mint
4-5 drops of stevia

Method:

Place all ingredients into your blender. Blend until fully combined and enjoy with a sprig of mint. Makes five to six cups. Store in the fridge for one to two days.

Stevia is a great alternative to sugar as it is natural, has zero calories, and is safe. Stevia (stevia rebaudiana) is a plant in the Chrysanthemum family, native to Brazil and Paraguay, which is traditionally used as a sweetener, herb and a remedy. Rebaudioside A (Reb-A) is the natural sweetener extracted from the stevia plant, and has been used commercially as a sweetener in Asia for 30 years and is available in Canada as an ingredient in Natural Health Products.
