The hot weather is here and while the increased temperatures can feel lovely and rejuvenating, it can also lead to skin inflammation and dehydration. So how do we balance? In the spirit of Ayurveda, its all about lifestyle. Diet is one major tool for rebalancing against our environments so I thought it would be a good idea to post some excellent summer smoothie recipes. These will help calm, cool and hydrate our bodies for perfect harmony thus summertime.

REFRESHING PINEAPPLE MINT SMOOTHIE

One of my fav smoothies in general, its packed with pitta-soothing ingredients of mint and coconut milk. I’ve posted about this shake before, for extra details see my prev post! This smoothie is so easy to make, just blend the following ingredients:

4 inches of cored pineapple
1 and 2/3 cups of coconut milk
the leaves of 4 sprigs of fresh mint
6 ice cubes

COOLING AVOCADO LIME ICEE

The beautiful and talented holistic nutritionist, Joy McCarthy gave my this uber hydrating summer smoothie recipe! Apparently avocado is not only packed with good fats but also a ton of water. Added details found in this retroblog. Give these ingredients a whiz in the ol’ blender for the perfect backyard beverage.

1 litre of filtered water
1 soft avocado, peeled, seed removed
Juice of 3 limes
1/4 cup chopped fresh mint
4-5 drops of stevia

AYURVEDIC GATORADE

Dehydrated from summertime outdoor activities? Maybe just naturally a sweater? Or perhaps you had a few too many patio cocktails and need a natural hangover cure recipe. This Ayurvedic Gatorade recipe come straight from Dr. Lad’s Ayurvedic Institute. If you read this blog, you know I love that organization! Its not quite a smoothie but its perfect for summer and its so easy to make by stirring up the below:

pinch of raw sugar
pinch of salt
juice of one-half lime
1 cup water

REJUVENATING MANGO DRINK

According to Dr. Lad, Ayurvedic Physician, mango is “the king of fruit” and this drink will bring you energy, vigor and vitality! Ghee may seem like an odd component for a summer smoothie but its actually incredibly anti-inflammatory and fortifying. Blend these ingredients together and enjoy!

1 cup mango juice
1 tsp ghee
pinch of cardamom
pinch of saffron

AFTERNOON DATE SHAKE

Sometimes the heat can make us feel tired. This is the perfect drink for an afternoon
energy boost. Dates are rasayanas (Ayurvedic rejuvenators)! Blend these all together until you get a smooth consistency:

5 dates, pitted
1 cup water
pinch of cardamom
the leaves of 3 sprigs of mint
